Introduction / History

The Ndaonese people live on Ndao Island, a small island located off the western coast of Rote in East Nusa Tenggara Province. Their language, Ndaonese, belongs to the Austronesian family and is closely related to other languages spoken in the Rote cluster.

Historically, the Ndaonese have been seafaring people, known for fishing and small-scale trade with neighboring islands. Their culture has been shaped by centuries of isolation and interaction with other Rote and Timor communities. Oral traditions, ancestral customs, and strong kinship ties remain central to their identity, even as modern influences slowly reach the island.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Ndaonese live in small coastal villages where fishing and farming are the main sources of livelihood. Men often fish in the surrounding waters, while women tend gardens that produce maize, cassava, and vegetables. Families are close-knit, and extended family networks provide social and economic support. Houses are typically built from wood and thatch, adapted to the island's tropical climate. Community life includes traditional ceremonies and celebrations, often marked by music, dance, and feasting during harvest or weddings. Meals are simple, based on fish, rice, and local produce, reflecting the island's resources and subsistence lifestyle.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Ndaonese identify with Christianity, primarily Protestant traditions introduced through missionary work during the colonial era. Church life is part of the community, and Christian practices are observed regularly. However, traditional beliefs and customs still influence aspects of life, especially in remote areas where animistic practices persist alongside Christian rituals. There is a need for deeper understanding of the gospel and for faith in Christ to become a transformative force in families and communities.

What Are Their Needs?

Access to healthcare and education is limited, leaving many vulnerable to preventable diseases and illiteracy. Economic opportunities are scarce, and families often depend on subsistence farming and fishing without modern tools or techniques. Spiritually, the Ndaonese need strong biblical teaching and discipleship resources in their heart language to help believers grow in faith. Leadership development and mission vision are essential so that local Christians can guide their communities and participate in global discipleship efforts.

Prayer Items

Pray for the Ndaonese to experience a deep understanding of God's word and for their faith to influence every aspect of life.
Ask God to raise up local leaders who can disciple others and lead churches with wisdom and humility.
Pray for physical needs such as improved healthcare, clean water, and educational opportunities for children.
Intercede for the completion of Bible translation and the creation of gospel resources in the Ndaonese language.
Pray that those who already follow Christ will be mobilized to share the good news with neighboring islands and become active participants in global missions.
